Nix & The Glen

The central area of Aurholm, formerly the Glen, is now a massive hole called Nix.

Nix splits the formerly single landmass of Aurholm into four – a northern, eastern, western, and southern continent, as well as a chain of islands that fractured from the original landmass.

For most of Aurholm's history, travel over the hole has been impractical or impossible, severely limiting international relations.

founding

The Glen was the residence of Camellia and Arsene as they constructed Aurholm. Humans eventually settled there in a paradise governed by Camellia. Arsene erected a spacial distortion field around the Glen to keep tides of would-be settlers out. This area, inside and including the field, was cast into Nix by Bartholomew, to quarantine Arsene from humanity, which left the hole in the world.

geography

Nix is conceptualized in-universe as a hole in the centre of Aurholm. In reality, though, it's all of the void that encompasses Aurholm. Nix lacks any inherent geography, but with the land and structures of the Glen strewn all through it, some consistent landmarks have arisen.

Space in Nix behaves strangely. Travel from one region to another follows unintuitive, shifting routes. Entrapment in random pockets of earth or stone or air is easy. These distortions worsen and proliferate the deeper one goes into Nix. After a certain point, exiting Nix is basically impossible.

The pleasant, meadowlike scenery of the Glen twists into strange, unpleasant hellscapes the deeper one goes into Nix. Nix hates humans and its environment attacks them; many materials produced here have strange or supernatural properties that damage humans specifically. Things that venture too deep into Nix are often distorted into monsters, eaten by the land, or claimed by demons.

Nix has many waterfalls and rivers, the water of which is poisoned and glacially cold. These waters link to the rest of Aurholm in sometimes unexpected places. Finally, the spacial distortions of Nix prevent satellites or space travel from working.

society

Nobody lives in Nix. It is a lawless hellpit that only whackjobs would consider inhabiting.

Some research teams, mostly nutters from Asphodel, have mapped sections of Nix and maintain bases on these outskirts. Independent delves for riches or glory aren't unheard of either, but more often than not, these adventurers never return. If they do, they're never the same.

Notable Places

Camellia's House: At the perceived core of Nix lies Arsene and Camellia's house. Completely untouched by the distortions that plague the rest of Nix, it still sits on its scenic lake, still pumping poison to the rest of the world. Camellia's corpse rests outside the house, grown into a tree larger than Aurholm's landmass. Arsene also lives here, guarding their house and the tree, hoping for Camellia's return.

relevant characters

Camellia: It's Cam. His corpse is chilling in Nix. It occasionally sheds flowers from its branches, which travel up Nix's waters to their fated recipients, and can perfectly grant any wish.

Arsene: Nix's only inhabitant, who lives in its deepest pit. He can leave whenever he wants, but he doesn't want to. Spacial distortions, warping of environments, and general bad vibes increase in proximity to him. He controls the geography of Nix.

Renard: A Knight from the Kingdoms of Asphodel who successfully delved to the bottom of Nix. Died in an altercation with Arsene, but was resurrected as an Archon. His squire, who completed the delve with him, became the first King of Asphodel.

Lisbet: A strange girl banished from Palida to Nix for supposed demonry. She died lost in its depths, then was resurrected as an Archon. Has since escaped and exonerated herself.
