the phonetic/writing system of palida is a nightmare bc palida considers it defiling to use their own script (ie, the translation of the 'raw' meaning in the sigils is considered deprecated once filtered through a person's head into sound) so they have a separate spoken language with NO alignment to their own script, then when they want to write things down they rip phonetic cognates from asphodel and align them to their own vocal cognates and just force it to work so every piece of palidan text looks and reads like insane gibberish that might have been written by an asphodelean except two seconds of looking at it makes it apparent its COMPLETELY different and you need to understand A COMPLETELY UNRELATED sigil system to get it

and if you already know asphodelean when the text is spoken the phonetic cognates don't match up to the same noises at all

to make an analogy it's like being taught what 猫 means, that its base sound is 'gato', being separately told that cats are called 'paka' and then being told to only ever write it as かと but lion is also 'paka' is りおん even though cat&lion have separate root sigils. its nuts.

ren: good cook but gets carried away adding weird flourishes. has like 5 or 6 dishes/ingredients he really likes and doesn't deviate from them well, if he tries to he makes a 'unique' version of the new dish that is suspiciously like the favourite dishes and probs doesnt work

mephi: awful, can't be bothered to cook, not even simple dishes, it's just water, raw isolated ingredients and microwave food. if he actually tries he does ok but he hates it.

phoenix: he does everything right and follows the recipe correctly (granted he insists on difficult recipes) but the oven explodes. every time

aquila: would be kinda offended at the notion he has to cook, but would get really into it if it were a gift for someone and be surprisingly good at it

raum: great home cook who could go pro if he wanted, likes to cook+experiment, michelin grade after feeding phoenix for so long. unwitting but phoenix's stupid tastes have made him prone to really complicated artsy fartsy type dishes and he's only like 50% self aware about it

reyl: explained before but she makes ok edible food when she has to even though she really doesn't like cooking and you can kinda tell, it's ok but its also bad

trivia: average-to-slightly above average cook but only makes simple stuff, can't be bothered doing anything too fancy or special, you're getting meat cooked on a fire and maybe a vegetable with it. for being what it is it tastes great tho

swift: awful. terrible cook, only reason he has ever gotten near an oven is because trivia is too lazy to cook sometimes and every time she regrets it

camille: he stares at a potato and it bakes itself. if he wasnt CHEATING he'd be... infuriatingly, professional level with zero effort for zero reason

lisbet: i don't think lisbet knows how to cook. i think she has a vague idea of what cooking entails but no idea how to do it or how to tell when food is cooked or not. she lives off sushi and handouts.

aster: itd be more impressive if she managed not to learn how to cook, but i also think she hasn't learned how to cook, and is terrible, not because she doesn't know 'what to do' but bc she has a horrendous sense of taste and keeps accepting weird inedible stuff as ingredients

poppy: hates the insinuation she would have to cook, would only want to try gimmicky aesthetic recipes she found on youtube, and be really discouraged when hers doesn't come out looking good

zach: kitchen nightmare. he is trying so hard why is every step going wrong. why is this part burnt and this part raw and why are all the ingredients expired and why are none of his pots the right one. it's.... probably edible if you try really hard?

in seriousness i've been having a harder and harder time not picking human in my crpgs and am kind of bothered knowing raum and reyl if i translated them over would probs be tieflings

Desiree initially gave stipends to her friends who were looking after raum and reyl as kids, cut off the money after it kept causing drama with people trying to get custody, then mason had to step in to stop the kids from uhhh basically dying

raum and reyl's childhood was like struggling to get out of a whirlpool 24/7 that only really stopped once they ditched all their caregivers
